Burglar proof windows and doors: What actually works

Choosing the right windows and doors is a great way to keep your home and family secure. Strong locks, tough glass and tested security standards all make your home much harder to break into, and far less tempting to try. That’s why, at HomeGuard, effective burglary protection is a key focus of every window and door we fit.

The evidence backs this up. The College of Policing found burglary was 53% lower in homes meeting Secured by Design standards than in homes that didn’t. Burglary attempts were 77% lower too.

So what makes a window or door secure enough to meet these standards? We’ve broken down the key features to look for, so you can choose burglar proof windows and doors with confidence.

Are burglar proof windows really possible?

No window is completely burglar proof, but the right one makes breaking in slow, difficult and noisy. Most burglars look for an easy target, so that’s often enough to put them off. It’s the reason our windows use multi-point locking and meet PAS 24 standards.

The security features that make a real difference

Multi-point locking

Basic window locks hold a window shut in just one place. Multi-point locking holds windows and doors shut in several places around the frame, so there’s no single weak spot to prise open.

Our windows use multi-point locking with extra bolts that slide into the frame for additional security. Our composite doors pair multi-point locking with Yale hardware to meet the highest security standards.

The right type of glass

Not every type of glass offers the same protection, so choosing the right one adds another layer of security to your home. Toughened safety glass is much stronger than ordinary glass. If a toughened glass pane does break, it crumbles into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards. It looks just like standard glass too, so your home stays bright, with natural daylight flooding in.

Our casement windows are an excellent option for modern homes, combining multi-point locking with toughened glass for complete peace of mind. You can also choose double or triple glazing for extra layers of glass.

Strong frames and door construction

A strong lock works best when it’s paired with a strong door frame. Our uPVC doors combine multi-point locking with reinforced frames for reliable protection.

Our composite doors are built for strength from the inside out. The core is dense foam or solid timber, covered in a hard-wearing outer layer. Our timber option is made from three layers of hardwood bonded together, giving it exceptional strength.

What do PAS 24 and Secured by Design mean?

These are the two names worth looking out for when comparing secure windows and doors.

PAS 24 is a British security test. Windows and doors are put through the kind of force a burglar might use, such as trying to push or prise them open.

Secured by Design is run by the police. When you choose products with its approval, you know they’ve been checked against its security standards.

Our windows meet PAS 24 and Secured by Design standards, so you can feel confident they’ve been properly tested to protect your family. Our composite doors are tested to PAS 24 too.

Why proper fitting matters

Whatever style you choose, even the most secure window or door relies on being fitted correctly. Our FENSA registration means our window installations meet building regulations, so your new windows perform exactly as they should.
